Pieces for Five Locks
Pieces for five locks were written for the Lachine Canal in Montreal, Quebec. In this musical portrait, the composers consider the many layers of history, mythology, and metaphor woven into the canal’s existence. Five performance spots were chosen along the canal’s banks, one for each lock, to showcase its evolutionary nature. Each location was chosen for its sonic properties: the sound of cars, the reflective resonance of bridge and water, the droning noise created by machinery from factories drawn by the easy transportation provided by the canal. Through the incorporation of these elements into the music, the canal will again be transformed and have another layer woven into it.
