In the book Canada’s Forgotten Salves, Two Hundred Years of Bondage, Marcel Trudel’s research documents the enslavement period in Quebec. This work references my interest in his documentation process, and how the yearly arrival of people enslaved ironically situates them as commodities; the very idea that Trudel was explaining. As well, I am further acknowledging ideas of transport, capitalism and colonialism’s traces in our society. This installation acts as a mere gesture to this history, and a hopeful continuation of further discussion of these issues, and specifically the act of marking.
