Memorial Bench
Cedar, concrete, rabbit, bison and coyote fur, leather

Our land, our people.

Pause and absorb the environment. While sitting on the bench, you will read on the wood: ‘Our land, our people, a kindred spirit’. This acknowledges the importance of the land you’re on.

This bench explores hybridization by combining raw and constructed materials: cedar boards and concrete. The concrete references construction, colonialism, weight and permanence. The cement is layered with animal fur: animals and the fur trade are rooted in the history at The Forks. Cedar is important because it’s one of the four sacred medicines in Indigenous culture.
